
John W. McDonald, 85 of Avon, Indiana, formerly of Elgin, Illinois, went peacefully into the arms of his Lord on Saturday, March 11, 2017 in his home with his loving wife Barbara at his side.
John was born to Stanley D. and Helen M. (Kuhlman) McDonald on February 3, 1932 in Elgin, Illinois. He attended Elgin High School and resided in Elgin for many years. He married Carol May Nelson on May 20, 1950 and was blessed with three children. David (Luanne Roscoe) grandchildren, Morgan and Spencer. Steven (Jan Rogers) grandson Neal (Regan) and great grandchildren Piper and Liam. Daughter Linda McDonald and grandson Taylor. Carol preceded John in death May 10, 1989.
John was blessed to marry Barbara J. Kellenberger Balsis on November 11, 1989 and enter into a loving relationship with her family. Step children Brad Balsis, Linda Balsis McMillan (Scott), grandchildren Chris, Chad and Sean. Curt Balsis (Mary Schneider), grandchildren Caleb, Lindsey, Karin and Josh. Sharon Balsis Dendler (Scott), grandchildren Jami, Kati and Heidi, and 15 great grandchildren.
John was employed for decades by the Modern Dairy Company of Elgin, Illinois. He enjoyed being a member of the Lions Club and Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. John was proud of his Scottish heritage and enjoyed a good round of golf and all things related to history. John was a man who will be missed by extended family and friends.
John was preceded in death by his parents, first wife Carol, son Steven B. McDonald, sister Meralou McDonald Flood, and brother Stanley D. McDonald, Jr.
A celebration of John’s life will be held Saturday, March 25th at Grace Evangelical Church, 1800 Bowes Road, Elgin, Illinois at 12:00pm followed by a light luncheon at the church. Interment will be at 3:00pm at Bluff City Cemetery, 945 Bluff City Boulevard, Elgin, Illinois.
